The Peoria Chiefs yielded seven runs in the third inning in an 11-3 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday night before 6,111 fans. The Chiefs record is 24-24 in the second half and 61-56 overall. Wisconsin got on the board first with seven runs in the third inning against Arturo Reyes. Johnny Davis led off with a bunt single and Chris McFarland followed with a double that Vaughn Bryan misplayed to allow Davis to score. Michael Ratterree walked before Reyes got the first out. Clint Coulter was the next hitter and he crushed his 18th home run to left field to open up a 4-0 Timber Rattlers lead. Taylor Brennan walked in front of consecutive singles by Dustin DeMuth and Steven Halcomb to load the bases. Jose Pena doubled off the wall in left to score two runs and Steve Sabatino relieved Reyes. Sabatino’s first batter was Davis, who hit a sacrifice fly to left to end the scoring in the inning at 7-0 Wisconsin. The Chiefs lost at home on a Saturday for the first time this season and their record is 8-1. The five-game series concludes Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal clash between Southwest Suburban Blue Conference rivals Orland Park Sandburg (24-15) and Lincoln-Way East (27-11) at EastSide Centre was dominated by Eagles senior pitcher Sarah Herold. She limited the Griffins to four hits in the 5-1 victory as Sandburg advances to the IHSA state title game Saturday against Gurnee Warren (28-9). Herold gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one, and also added three hits of her own. The only run was unearned in the fifth and came on an RBI single by Alana Selvaggio bringing home Nicole O’Donnell. Junior first baseman Katie Krzus led the Eagles with three hits including a two-run homer and 4 RBI’s.

Top ranked Manteno High School beat the East Peoria Red Raiders 4-2 in the IHSA Class 3A Supersectional at Illinois State University Monday evening. The Red Raiders (32-5) led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, that’s when the Panthers (38-1) struck for three runs off three hits and two East Peoria errors. Manteno senior pitcher Brooke Stulga and Western Illinois University recruit retired the final 14 EP batters. She tossed a three hitter, walked none and struck out three. Junior third baseman Taylor Kellum provided all of the Raiders offense with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Manteno faces Sterling High School at Eastside Centre in the State semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The Rock Island Alleman softball team late rally stuns Monticello 7-5 in the Illinois High School Class 2A state semifinal game Friday afternoon at EastSide Centre. The Pioneers advance to state title game against Teutopolis Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Rock Island Alleman (31-6) scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of senior Mackenzie Sanchez‘s grand slam off of Monticello Sages (30-5) senior Chrissy Gadbury.

East Peoria Junior Ashley Emert homered and senior Sarah Finck pitcher led the Red Raiders to a 6-1 victory at Morton High School Thursday. East Peoria wrapped up an unbeaten Mid-Illini Conference season. Ciera Montgomery doubled to start a two-run second inning for the Raiders (26-4, 14-0). Emert belted a solo home run in the fifth and Kali George capped the scoring with  a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh. Finck allowed three hits and struck out nine Potters for the win. Jessica Cave drove in the only run for Morton.
