Peoria Speedway

When the skies cleared Saturday afternoon and the sun came out I gathered up my camera equipment and headed to the Peoria Speedway. They were hosting the AMA Holeshot Series. There were a total of twenty-nine races that included 50cc racers, Open Quads, Seniors and Pro/Expert singles. The event was brought to you by Steve Nace Racing Promotions. Jerrod Hull in the #12 Heartland Trailer Mfg. 410 sprint car from Sikeston, MO rolled into Peoria Speedway and dominated the field in the Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) event Sunday night. Jerrod came from last in his heat race to finish second and never trailed the rest of the evening. He won the six car dash for cash race beating #22B Dustin Barks, then lead wire to wire to capture the 25 lap A-Main with #23 Robbie Standridge finishing second. Jerrod Hull Dominates MOWA Sprint Car Race at Peoria Speedway

Made a stop by the Peoria Speedway early on my way to photograph Bradley University soccer. I arrived around 4:00pm and wandered thru the pit area as the big haulers were unloading for the Northern All-Stars Summernationals race. I got a few driver shots including NASCAR star Kenny Schrader as they were getting ready for hot laps. Having not lost at Peoria Speedway since July, Steve Lance Jr. knew he had a challenge as NALMS rolled into the track Thursday night. With a star-studded field on hand, Jason Feger jumped to the high side as the green flew and out-gunned Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member Billy Moyer going into turn 1 ,but Moyer pulled even on the front stretch. Feger then rim-rode through tuns 1 and 2 and dove to the bottom to take the lead. Moyer contuned to work the bottom, but Lance, Jr. blew by on the top coming out of turn 2 on lap 10 to take second. Kenny Schrader survived 6 caution flags and a demo derby behind him, going flag-to-flag for the win in the UMP Modifieds.

Kenny Schrader & Northern All-Stars Invade Peoria Speedway

Promoter Curt Mottaz upped the ante at Peoria Speedway’s “Season Championships” events Saturday night as he offered each front-row starter in all 5 classes the chance to make additional money with the “Front Row Challenge”. The front-row starters in each division were guaranteed starting money plus a bonus to start the feature from the back and were paid for each car they passed on the track. 3 of the 5 divisions accepted the offer, making for a terrific night of racing. In one of the best races of the season, Steve Lance Jr., Jason Jaggers and Billy Drake put on a line-swapping, side jobbing 30 lap feature.. John Gardner was on the pole, but chose to take the front-row challenge and a guaranteed $350 to start, along with $40 for each car passed. Gardner moving to the back allowed Mike Mullvain and Gerry Reeder to occupy the front row as Mullvain jumped to the lead at the start. Jaggers followed Mullvain on the bottom for 2nd. Erik Bruce won his 3^rd straight UMP Modified feature, leading flag-to-flag. Bruce survived 5 caution periods but was never seriously challenged. Ray Bollinger had a rough night, dropping out of both the heat race and feature, but nudged Mark Johnson for the Track Championship for the Modifieds. Jack Siegel lead all 15 laps of the Limited Late Model feature, cementing his Track Championship.

Season Ending Championships at Peoria Speedway

It was a typical hot summer night in Peoria, IL so I decided to try something different for me, and go photograph some good old-fashioned dirt track racing at Peoria Speedway. There was a huge crowd and lot’s of drivers to try to tame the 3/8 mile race track. Steve Lance Jr. held off Brandon Sheppard to win his seventh straight victory in the Late Model Feature. Erik Bruce won his fourth consecutive victory at the Speedway with a come from behind win over Ray Bollinger in the Modified feature. Steve Shannon held off Jack Siegel to capture his third straight win in the Limited Late Model feature. Fans got to watch a first as the Vintage cars made there first appearance on the track. Gary Koering took the victory in his 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle. I highly recommend that you give it a try, because you will go back for more.
