The Illinois State men’s basketball team’s 62-55 win Monday night over Texas A&M in the quarterfinal round of the College Basketball Invitational marks just the third time in program history that the Redbirds have won two postseason contests in the same season, with the last time coming during the 1995-96 season. ISU was led by Daishon Knight, who connected on 50 percent of his shot attempts from the field, scoring 17 points. Knight also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, all coming at the defensive end in 36 minutes. John Jones was the only other Redbird to score in double figures, as he tied a career-high 12 points, scoring nine-straight in the first half. The Aggies were led in scoring by sophomore forward Antwan Space. With the win, the Redbirds continue CBI play Siena College in Loudonville, NY Wednesday evening at 6:05 p.m. CT in the tournament semifinals.

Playing against its second top-25 ranked team of the season, Illinois State led for the majority of the game over No. 25 Dayton and shot 50 percent from the field on its way to an 81-75 win for the Redbirds (5-4) over the nationally-ranked Flyers (7-2) Saturday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The victory was the first for the Redbirds over a nationally-ranked opponent since Feb. 9, 2013, when ISU defeated No. 16 Creighton 75-72, and was the first win over a ranked opponent inside Redbird Arena. Daishon Knight led four Redbird players in double figures with 20 points, just one point shy of his career high, and added six rebounds and four assists in the victory for ISU. Bobby Hunter added 16 points, Zach Lofton chipped in 13 points and Reggie Lynch added 10 points and six rebounds for the Redbirds. Dayton attempted to trim the lead, but Illinois State held on for the 81-75 win over the Flyers. Illinois State will return to action Monday, Dec. 16, at Oakland for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

No. 16 ranked Creighton (13-1, 2-0) held off a late Illinois State (9-5, 0-2) rally to beat the Redbirds 79-72 Wednesday night in Normal, IL before 8,813 fans. Bryant Allen and Tyler Brown led the way offensively for the Redbirds with 15 points apiece, while Zeke Upshaw chipped in a career-high 11 points. The ISU defense limited national player of the year candidate Doug McDermott to just 15 points, as Grant Gibbs led the Bluejays with 16. The seven-point margin of victory was the smallest this season for the preseason favorites to win the Missouri Valley Conference. With the Bluejays up 69-65 at the 5:12 mark, Brown found Jackie Carmichael for a two to bring ISU back within two, before Kaza Keane hit one free throw to make it a one-point game. That was the closest the Redbirds would get the rest of the way, as Carmichael missed a three-point attempt with the score 73-70 in the game’s final minute.
