East Peoria Junior Ashley Emert homered and senior Sarah Finck pitcher led the Red Raiders to a 6-1 victory at Morton High School Thursday. East Peoria wrapped up an unbeaten Mid-Illini Conference season. Ciera Montgomery doubled to start a two-run second inning for the Raiders (26-4, 14-0). Emert belted a solo home run in the fifth and Kali George capped the scoring with  a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh. Finck allowed three hits and struck out nine Potters for the win. Jessica Cave drove in the only run for Morton.

The IHSA No. 10-ranked Washington Panthers (5-0) ended Morton’s 36-game league win streak with a 69-56, three-overtime Class 3A girls basketball victory at the Potterdome. It was the Potters first Mid-Illini loss since Jan. 25, 2011 Senior guard Hayley Reneau gave the game its 14th and final lead change 54 seconds into the third overtime. The senior hit the go-ahead, 3-pointer in the 3rd OT. She made five 3s to finish with a game-high 18 points. Washington extended its lead to six thanks to a three-point play by senior guard Makayla Hartter (17 points). The senior guard was fouled after making a layup and sunk the free throw for a 60-54 lead. She also helped hold Morton’s leading scorer sophomore Chandler Ryan to 10 points on 4-for-17 shooting. Morton freshman Brandi Bisping scored 15 and senior Emily Schultz, who scored seven straight in the second quarter, added 12 before both fouled out. The Panthers junior forward Jess Learned added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Metamora lady Redbirds defeated  the Washington Panthers (24-11), 18-25, 25-21, 25-21 to capture the IHSA Class 3A Metamora Regional title Thursday night. The Redbirds (30-6) trailed 21-19 in the third set before an ace from Delaney Tjaden capped a 3-0 run for 22-21 lead, forcing Washington to call a timeout. Hannah Heinz (15 kills), Michelle Escue (34 assists) and Baylie Little (15 digs) led the Panthers. This is the Redbirds fourth straight regional title and 12th since 2001. Click here to view more photo’s.

Limestone (11-2-1) battled the Washington Panthers on Tuesday night in Bartonville to a three set victory 20-25, 26-24, 25-22 to remain undefeated in the Mid-Illini Conference. The Rockets and Metamora are both 5-0. Limestone, which had beaten the Panthers 17 days ago in three sets, led 21-16 thanks to a kill from Heather Robinson (14 kills, 14 assists, two blocks). Washington (13-6, 4-1) responded with a 4-0 run, cutting the match to 21-20. In that stretch, the Panthers got points from Zoe Wetherell (block), Michelle Escue (ace), a hitting error and a block by Jessica Learned (11 kills, four blocks). Sophomore Bailee Dunne (25 digs) served three of her match-high seven aces in a five-point run. Senior Marissa Boyer with 19 assists were a match-high for Limestone. McKenna Weaver added 16 digs for the Rockets while Washington got 17 digs from sophomore outside hitter Hannah Heinz.

The visiting Morton Potters (5-1-3, 2-0-1) moved into a tie for first in the Mid-Illini Conference thanks to a powerful attack that included three goals from Jonah Greving as they defeated the Limestone Rockets 6-1. Limestone senior Drew Hillman tied the game 1-1 at the 15-minute mark. The deadlock was broken almost instantly, however, as Jared Stoops put the Potters ahead for good with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. Greving added a pair before the break to make it 4-1, with insurance goals by Andrew Dryden and Noah Spencer preserved the victory.
