The Illinois Central College Lady Cougars (12-2) defeated the second ranked Kirkwood Community College Eagles 65-53 Monday night to capture the Stoney Creek Inn Cougar Holiday basketball tournament. Sophomore forward Chanta Wright paced the Cougars with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Gabby Williams added 10 points and 14 boards, and April Gebke chipped in 11 points and five assists. ICC held Kirkwood to 24.6 percent shooting (14-for-57) from the floor. The Eagles were led by freshman guard Tyra Polite with 16 points and sophomore Danielle Woolfolk added 13 points.

Kirkwood Community College (13-3) jumped out early for a double-digit first half lead using a 16-0 run that spanned 8:42 and held on to defeat the hosts ICC (13-3) 59-41 in the championship game of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Cougar Holiday Tournament at Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium. The Eagles had a rebounding advantage (52-34) and shot 47.9 percent from the field, led by Kianna Jacobs’ game highs with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Helena Rodriguez led the Cougars in scoring with 12 points.

Kirkwood Community College beat the Cincinnati State Technical & Community College 75-60 in a first round game of the Fairfield Inn and Suites Holiday Tournament. The Eagles wore down the Surge who only had seven healthy players during the game at Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium in East Peoria, IL. Kianna Jacobs led Kirkwood in scoring with 21 points and Whitney Henderson added 13. Desiree Ash scored 15 for Cincinnati State, Brandi Henschen added 14 and Hannah Stephenson had 12. The Eagles advance to face top seeded Lake Michigan College at 6 p.m. Saturday.

My Canon Mark III’s & new Mark IV got a real workout and performed flawlessly as I photographed 18 games over 4 days and shot 10,432 frames to capture the NJCAA Division II National tournament held on the Illinois Central College campus in East Peoria, IL. The tournament games were played from March 17-20. The finals was played Saturday night between defending champions Kirkwood Community College from Cedar Rapids, IA and the Lady Patriots of Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, VA. Kirkwood held off the talented Patriots to win there fourth consecutive National Championship for head coach Kim Muhl. The tournament MVP was Andi Waugaman from Kirkwood and the Caterpillar Power Player of the tournament was Andrea Barbour of Patrick Henry. It was a fantastic week of basketball. A special thanks to Sue Sinclair, Susan Grebner, Guy Goodman and all of there staff and volunteers who put on a fantastic tournament.
