Eureka High School held Stillman Valley to 38 points and 39 percent field goal shooting Monday night. The Hornets also forced 22 turnovers, instead it seemed to do everything but fall through the net for the ladies in a 38-26 loss to the Cardinals in the IHSA Monmouth Class 2A Super-Sectional. The Hornets were 10 of 53 from the field for 18.9 percent, ending their season with a 24-7 record. Eureka senior guard Kalla Gold, who scored a game-high 15 points on 5-of-21 accuracy from the field. Five-foot-10 senior Jessica Gerig led Stillman Valley with 11 points and nine rebounds. Katie Fowler, also 5-10, added nine points and seven boards for the Cardinals, who outrebounded Eureka, 39-30.

Off to its best start in school history, the Grinnell College men’s basketball team won a hard fought 102-90 come-from-behind victory over Monmouth College before 875 fans. The Pioneers are now a program-best 14-1 on the season while improving to 10-1 in the Midwest Conference. They’ll take that mark into Saturday afternoon’s contest at Lake Forest College, a team that is 11-0 in the league. Junior guard Griffin Lentsch led Grinnell with 30 points, hitting 5-of-12 from 3-point land. Also in double figures for the Pioneers were Patrick Maher with 16 points and Matt Chalupa with 10. Kenny Foster, Michael DeDecker and David Altman led the Fighting Scots in scoring with 14 points each. The Pioneers had 13 steals and forced 35 turnovers with there tenacious man-to-man defense.
