The Rock Island Alleman softball team late rally stuns Monticello 7-5 in the Illinois High School Class 2A state semifinal game Friday afternoon at EastSide Centre. The Pioneers advance to state title game against Teutopolis Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Rock Island Alleman (31-6) scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of senior Mackenzie Sanchez‘s grand slam off of Monticello Sages (30-5) senior Chrissy Gadbury.

It only took 74 hours for the East Peoria (23-3) to win the Morton Regional Class 3A championship against the host Potters (24-9). The Red Raiders hit three home runs to post a 6-4 victory. Junior outfielder Lauren Kent (2-for-3) belted a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth with two-outs and EP trailing 2-0. A Morton error scored Brooke Jacobs, who hit a double that knocked off Morton pitcher Nicole Koch’s forehead, and tied the game at 2-2. Sarah Finck then blooped a single over into right field for a 3-2 last lead. Nicole Montgomery (2-for-3, home run, double, two RBIs) added a pair of insurance with a two-run homer to the bleachers in left field. Her blast scored Taylor Kellum (2-for-3), who led off the fifth with a walk. Sarah Finck (2-for-4, home run, two RBIs) then set the final score when she led off the sixth a homer to left. She picked up the win with 11 strikeouts and allowing three walks. East Peoria plays Metamora (24-11) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Limestone Sectional semifinal.

I went down to O’Brien Field to photograph the next to last home game of the season of the Peoria Chiefs. Looking to shoot some behind the scenes stuff of the crowd rather than the game, after nearly six months of shooting baseball over the summer. The Peoria Chiefs’ three-game winning streak ended when the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three runs in the ninth inning to hand the Chiefs a 4-1 loss on Tuesday on Illini Night at O’Brien Field before 1,334 fans. The loss dampened a night that started with new Illinois men’s basketball coach John Groce throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. The Timber Rattlers had three straight singles to start the inning against Peoria reliever Justin Berg to break the tie. A second run scored on an error by Wes Darvill and Berg was lifted for Austin Reed. Click here for game stats.

The Peoria Chiefs committed 5 costly errors were defeated by the Burlington Bees 5-1 before 3,234 fans on Bradley University Community night at O’Brien Field. All five of there runs scored were unearned. The Chiefs could manage just two hits off Burlington starter Tanner Peters (2-4), who also struck out eight in five innings of work. Chiefs starting pitcher Jeffry Antigua (1-2) took the loss. Bradley Braves new women’s head basketball coach Michael Brooks threw out the first pitch prior to the start of the game. Click here for the game box score.
