Images from Saturday’s Morton Community Bank  Cycling Classic. Competitors race thru the downtown streets for 75 minutes, at times reaching speeds of 30 mph on the front straightaway and 35 mph on the back. The Cycling Classic was the final event of six in determining the Illinois Cup, which recognizes the top riders and teams through a points system based on there finish.

The premier bicycle race in the Peoria area turns 25 this year. The Peoria Bicycle Club hosted the Morton Community Bank Cycling Classic on Saturday through the streets of Morton, IL. Nicolai Broechner from Denmark out-sprinted the field to win the day’s main event, run in triple-digit temperatures through the downtown course. Nine of the 42 riders in the field dropped out before the race ended, despite a “feed zone” that was added to this year’s event. High area finisher in the main event was Brett Bohanan of Washington, IL, who placed sixth. A junior rider from East Peoria, IL, Mitchell Gray, won the junior men’s 15-18 race. In the Masters 50+/60+ race, Gary Dyer, 54, from Eureka, IL placed second, behind Jeannie Kuhajek, 39, of Crystal Lake, IL.

Shot’s from Sunday at the 23rd annual Peoria Cycling Classic from the streets of downtown Peoria. This years race was once again a top notch event. Chicago native David Moyer of xXx Racing dominated the 38-man field winning the Illinois State Criterium Championship by half a lap. Greg Springborn from the Proctor Cycling Team, rode in two masters category events and the featured race, the Pro 1/2. Oh, and the children’s exhibition earlier in the day.
